Martha Vaughan

July 29, 1932 ~ June 9, 2022 (age 89)

Martha Jane (Brake) Vaughan was born on a hot summer day on July 29, 1932. She was the 5th of 8 children born in the little house they grew up in alongside fields of alfalfa, cotton, maize and wheat. She loved the orchard of fruit trees consisting of apricots, plums and peaches that smelled so sweet in the springtime. She loved riding in the cotton wagon down to the cotton gin each fall when they began the harvest of it, although she was never too crazy about hoeing it to remove the weeds or dragging that canvas sack behind her to help pull the cotton.

She began grade school in 1938, as a Southside Red Devil. It was there where she began many friendships that have lasted through the years, until they have begun passing away one by one. She was secretary and treasurer of several of her classes through school. She loved fishing and playing basketball, which she was pretty good at, and led to her meeting the love of her life, Donald Vaughan, and marrying him in 1950 and he was her love and dearest friend until his death in 2014.

They moved around to many states with Don’s work, including Texas, New Jersey, Kentucky, and Tennessee, as well as others, and finally his retirement and moving back to Oklahoma in 1995 to both their delight. At each new place they called home they developed a strong relationship as members of a church family, as their faith in God was very important to both of them. It was her faith that sustained her after Don’s passing in 2014. She knew she was blessed, and she counted each blessing every day, including each and every friend that she loved dearly, as well as her entire family that meant the world to her. Martha was a member of the Central Baptist church in Lawton. She was preceded in death by: her parents, Georgia and Ralph Brake, husband Donald, sister Lucille, brothers Paul, Tommy, Grady, and Harold. Remaining survivors include: brother, Kenneth Brake of Hastings, OK, and sister, Karen Bartling of Altus, OK. along with numerous other relatives and close friends.
