Justin James Sanders was born March 13, 1985 in Sioux Falls, SD. At only 35, he died unexpectedly at home from heart failure on February 8, 2021.
Justin grew up in South Dakota and Arizona and joined the United States Army just before he turned 18 in 2003. Justin served honorably for 13 years before his medical retirement in 2016. He served in many places, including Babbenhausen, Germany; Fort Hood, Fort Lewis, Fort Sill, and deployment locations including Iraq, Kuwait, UAE, and more. He was a great leader and loved being part of the 13M (field artillery) world.
Justin was incredibly intelligent and enjoyed playing chess and reading. He was extremely interested in history, natural history, science, and oceanography. He loved all animals and enjoyed caring for them.
Justin is survived by his loving wife of 13 years, Freya Sarah Barlow; their dogs Gwennie, Athena, and Braeda, as well as their cat Ash; his adoptive parents, Roger and Susanne Sanders and sister Jocelyn of Gilbert, AZ; his best friend Laurence McGowan Jr.; and his other Army brothers and sisters.
Justin made friends everywhere he went and had an engaging personality. He will be remembered by all.
The celebration of Justin’s life will be held at McGowan Ranch located near Springer, OK. We will send him off in the most Viking way possible, with a bonfire, his favorite fireworks, and dark beer (BYOB). We would like to begin at 6pm on February 21, 2021, weather permitting.
