Jesse O. Bennett

September 6, 1939 ~ August 18, 2021 (age 81)


Jesse O. Bennett, age 81, of Lawton passed away Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at his residence. 

Jesse was born September 6,1939 in Reid, Mississippi to Lottis Luvae Westmoreland and Jessie Bennett. He was the second child of six children. The family migrated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin while he was at a young age. In 1959, Jesse joined the US Army and proudly served our country as a truck driver. His first duty station was in Germany. There, he met Maria Ellmann and fell in love. The two were married on October 11th, 1961. Three years later, the couple had a daughter, Darlene Renee. He served a tour in Vietnam, and in 1969, he returned to Germany and was stationed in Mannheim where he achieved the rank of Sergeant 1st Class. In 1975 Jesse returned stateside and was stationed in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.  While there, he received his last tour of duty in Korea. While he was in Korea, he had his wife and child moved to Lawton, Oklahoma where he had his home built. After 20 ½ years of service, Jesse retired honorably from the US Army in 1978. Medals and honors include National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Four Service Stars; Bronze Star Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, Two Overseas Service Bars, Good Conduct Medal Sixth Award, Army Commendation Medal, republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm, and Expert Rifle. In 1979, Jesse began his final career with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, and in 1982, he was blessed with his grandchild, Valerie. After retiring from Goodyear, he became an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed boating, fishing, and hunting. He especially enjoyed bow hunting.  

Jesse dearly loved his family. Even though he lived far away from his siblings and mother, he still endeavored to keep a strong bond. Jesse would often attend family functions, reunions, and speak fondly of their many memories. 

Preceded in death by his parents, Jessie Bennett and Lottis Luvae Westmoreland and one sister, Susanna Leonard, Jesse is survived by his wife, Maria Bennett of Lawton; one daughter, Darlene Bennett of Tulsa; one granddaughter, Valerie Lavender-Little and spouse Michael Little of Oklahoma City; five great grandchildren, Jeremiah, Joshua, Monika, Angel and Jesse all of Oklahoma City; five siblings, Clyde Bennett and spouse Ceola of Mequon, Wisconsin, Lottis Hogans and spouse John of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Mack Bennett and spouse Karen of Augusta, Georgia, Sheila Wilson and spouse Terry of Charlotte, North Carolina and David Westmoreland and spouse Vivian of Milwaukee, Wisconsin along with many nieces and nephews. 

The Bennett family would like to thank everyone for your prayers during our time of sorrow. We especially want to thank Heidi Martinez for all her love and support for both Jesse and Maria Bennett over the years.
