Obituary

David Susberry V, son of David Susberry IV and Nakisha Susberry, passed away on March 16, 2021.

David was born November 1, 2001, in Germany. As a military child, David spent his time growing up around the globe, living not only overseas but also in Washington, Oklahoma, Missouri, Louisiana, and Texas. While in school, David enjoyed playing sports - excelling in football and basketball - hanging out with his friends, working out, swimming, eating … a lot, and finding fun, wherever it may be.

David had an infectious energy about him, as though he walked around under a permanent spotlight. A person would be hard-pressed not to be drawn to him once they met. Often surrounded by a cloud of music pumping from his headphones, David loved to dance along to the beat, even if he had to do so by himself in a public place. He also had an interesting aversion to wearing shirts, often opting to go topless, perhaps to show off his muscles.

Family was an important thing in David’s life, something that made him feel like he always had someone in his corner. Despite the distance, he was known to stay up all night playing video games with his cousins across three different states while also chatting on their phones simultaneously. He greatly admired his big sister, Nadya, and enjoyed being able to mentor his younger cousins. He often spent summers in Lawton with his extended family, referred to as the “summer son” by his aunts and uncles.

David had a determination to be envied. Strong-willed, once he set his mind to something, David rarely wavered from it. While often done in a positive way, his resolute nature could sometimes shade him as stubborn. In fact, one time he decided to stop calling his auntie by that title when she kept his Xbox cord and referred to her by her first name only from that point on. Yet, if things didn’t break his way, David was known to flash his signature mischievous smile, one that could melt the hardest of hearts, and make people forgive him for any transgressions.

He is survived by his parents, David Susberry IV and Nakisha Susberry; sister, Nadya; maternal grandmother Claudine Schooler (Loui); maternal grandfather James Hanna; paternal grandmother Claudette Barnes; great grandparents Edward and Gene Bolden; maternal aunts Felicia Ross and Sabrina Cole (Torrence); maternal uncles James Hanna (Victoria) and Chris Hanna (Jennie); paternal aunts Jasmine Barnes, Lakiesha Barnes, and Sha Susberry; cousins Mahlik, Christian, Nija, Tyrique, Christopher, Daija, Nija, Leilah, Amillyah, Darius, AJ, Chris (Dash), Mason, Kaiden, and Devyn; special friends, Brooklyn and Kyrese, and a host of other family and friends. He is preceded in death by his great-grandparents Doris and Samuel Chappel; great-great-grandmother Johnnie M. Vick; great aunts Peggy Williams, Helen Saunders, Velma L. Cook, and Pamela M. Nmezi; and great uncle Melvin L. Vick Jr.
