Cornelia "Corky" Maebius Zumbro was born 13 September 1936 and was called Home to be with Jesus Friday, 16 July 2021. She will be laid to rest with her beloved husband in the National Cemetery at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma.
Corky was born in Saginaw, Michigan and was the second of three children. Her family moved often and Corky established roots in both Casper, WY and Tulsa, OK. After three semesters at the University of Wyoming where she pledged Tri Delta, Corky completed a bachelor's degree in business at the University of Tulsa. After college graduation Corky traveled alone to Nurnberg, Germany to marry her love, Harold D.Zumbro (Dave), LTC, US Army. They were married 16 October 1960. Corky was active in her children's lives, working as the executive assistant in a private school in Lawton, OK where her daughter attended. She was most proud of her position as Librarian's Assistant at Meeker Elementary in Greeley, CO. Her superb organizational talents were greatly appreciated for many years at G.B. Dental Associates in Greeley, CO. Corky was an amazing woman. She endured a lot of pain during her childhood and sent her husband to war twice. She saw her husband through chronic illness that changed their relationship, but she continued to hold the family together. She loved God with every fiber of her being and lived her life in a manner that showed both her salt and light. She endured when her husband died by suicide in 1987 after years of combat related post-traumatic stress. She was there for both her children in the happiest and saddest moments of their lives. She loved her granddaughters very much and was proud of all of them. She was so full of life. Corky had a "special in" with God on the best parking places. She was the best at remembering things that held meaning to others. We called her the Corkster, because she was such a corker, proving that she could love Jesus and still be her sassy self. The hole in our hearts defies description. We are so incredibly thankful to have had her for 85 years and we know that once she had a glimpse of the other side, she was not coming back. We are thankful for the hope of reunion for eternity, and for now we will just take our loss one breath at a time.
Corky is preceded in death by her parents, Jed and Gertrude "Trudy" Maebius, her husband, Harold D. Zumbro, and her sister Janet Stouffer. She is survived by her brother Jed (Nancy) Maebius of San Antonio, TX; her children David (Holly) Zumbro of Anchorage, AK; Susan (Phil) Friedlan of Scottsdale, AZ; her granddaughters Molly (Andy) Moehlman of Silver Spring, MD; Samantha (Rodney) Roberts of Baltimore, MD; Mallory Friedlan, and Hannah Friedlan, both of Scottsdale, AZ.
