We are deeply sorry for your loss - the staff at Whinery-Huddleston
Claudine Powell was born March 10, 1956, in Bronx, New York, to Claude Powell and Doris Chappel. One of four children, Claudine displayed a zest for life from a very early age, something that luckily stayed with her into adulthood. She and her family moved to New Jersey where she grew up and attend school. Math was one of her favorite subjects, which is good because we all know her spelling ability was … iffy, and she was actively involved in sports, eventually earning a coveted spot on the drill team.
After graduation, she met and married James Hanna Sr. and began to traverse the most important path in her life: being a mother. In 1983, her family relocated to Lawton, Oklahoma, where she raised her five children with pride, laughter, and care. She was very involved in the lives of her children - even as they transitioned from children to adults themselves - and loved being a grandmother nearly as much. She looked to find fun and ways to make memories as she loved to travel, to dance, to cruise, and to “go to the place,” also known as the casino, with her bestie.
Having perhaps one of the most charitable hearts of those around her, Claudine worked as a CMA in the medical field for most of her adult life, which allowed her to share her compassion with those in recovery or transitioning through the end of their lives. Caring for others was not simply a passion but the wellspring from which she felt her true purpose in the world. There are many families from places like Willow Park, Western Hills, and Cedar Crest that were able to rest assured their loved one was in good hands with Claudine at the helm.
Throughout her life, Claudine met many people that would become lifelong friends, but none more important than when she met Louie Foster in 2004 and decided to merge her life with his. In 2007, she joined the Mistletoe Chapter No. 77 Order of the Eastern Stars where she was able to continue to give back to others through charity work in our community.
A kind woman with a big heart would be too simple to describe Claudine. Each person who crossed paths with her would come away feeling loved and cared for in a way that will leave an indelible mark on their lives. Ask anyone who knew her and they will tell you what an honor it was to have met her and to be able to count her as a friend. She will always be viewed as more than a mother, more than a friend, more than a sister, more than a grandma, and more than a bestie. She was just … more.
She is survived by her children, Felicia Ross, James Hanna (Victoria), Christopher Hanna (Jennie), Nakisha Watkins (Gregory), and Sabrina Cole (Torrence); a brother, Charlie Powell; her significant other, Louie Foster; three nieces, Nakia Moment, Ursula Dalton, and Deitra McRae; two nephews, Donald (Dobbs) McRae and Paul Church; eighteen grandchildren and a host of friends that often felt more like family. She is preceded in death by her parents, Claude Powell and Doris Chappel; her aunt Annimae McPherson and her two sisters, Peggy Ann Williams and Louise Saunders.
