Elsie Marie (Fletcher) Mason was born on November 14, 1938 in Chickasha, Oklahoma to Theodore and Gertrude (Glasker) Fletcher. She died on March 12, 2012 in Lawton, Oklahoma at the age of 73. Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 16, 2012 in the Whinery-Huddleston Chapel with Rev Dr Roger Alford, officiating along with Reverend Leodis Strong, and Reverend Ruth Holmes . Interment will be at 2:00 PM at the Ft Sill Post Cemetery where she will join her late husband, Willie Mason. Viewing is scheduled for Thursday, March 15, 2012 from 9:00 AM-8:00 PM at the funeral home.
Elsie Marie Fletcher was born November 14, 1938 in Chickasha, OK to Gertrude & Theodore Fletcher. She attended Lincoln School in Chickasha, and graduated as salutatorian of her class in May 1956. She enrolled in Oklahoma College for Women for one semester. She had a daughter born in 1955. In 1958 she met Willie Mason and they were married in October 19, 1962. He adopted her daughter Marcia shortly after their marriage. They traveled to Fort Benning, GA in 1965. In 1966 they traveled to Hanau, Germany and remained there until they were transferred to Fort Ord, California in November 1968. In 1970, they returned to Lawton, OK to remain there while her husband was assigned to Korea. On July 1, 1971, she was hired at Fort Sill, OK at the Transportation Department as a clerk typist. In 1971 she joined Grant Chapel AME Church. Her husband Willie Mason died on active duty on May 23, 1974. She continued to work in transportation as a shipment clerk. She met SGM Robert Sanders in 1975, they got married in October 1979. She moved to Houston, Texas in 1981, and worked at the reserve center, later transferring to the Department of State passport office where she worked until 1986. Her marriage ended in divorce in 1984, and she moved back to Lawton, OK in 1986 and started back to work at the Transportation Department where she remained until 2012. Elsie was a fun loving person, who loved people and loved helping people. While attending Grant Chapel, Elsie held many positions in the church. She loved doing missionary work. She was the angel tree prison ministry coordinator for 10 years, also participated in feeding of the inmates every 2nd Thursday at the Redemption Church in Lawton. Elsie held many positions in the local missionary society and was treasurer of the area missionary society for eight years.
She was preceded in death by her Grandmother, Father, Mother, and 3 Brothers.
Survivors include her daughter, Marcia Freeman; grandchildren, Michael Freeman II and Michaela Freeman, all of Alexandria, VA; son in law Michael Freeman I of Fredericksburg, VA; sisters, Joyce Kepney and husband Charles of Austin, TX, and Seleda Page of Lawton; a sister in law, Earthie Child of Dallas, TX; an adopted daughter, MAJ Glema Gordon, USA (ret) of Anthony, FL; an adopted son, MSG Clarence Rhodes, USA (ret) of Junction City, KS; a special cousin, Frances Hatchett and husband Tommy of San Diego, CA; special nephews, Anthony and Sean Page of Dallas, TX; a special niece, Stacy Kepney of Austin, TX; her devoted Grant Chapel church family, Transportation and Finance family from Ft Sill; and a host of additional family and friends which includes her longtime friend, Raymond Lee.
